Mechatronics Engineer - Electronics

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechatronics Engineer specialising in Electronics to take responsibility for the design, implementation and testing of the electronic equipment and real-time software components of novel mechatronic devices. This is a permanent opportunity based at our Welwyn Garden City.  (Hybrid Working)

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Design, specification and/or fabrication of electrical and electronic sub-systems such as PCBs, cabling, motor controllers, sensor acquisition systems, micro-controllers, etc.
  • Collaborating on system architecture design (hardware and software)
  • Designing and implementing real-time and/or embedded software according to systems requirements
  • Liaising with workshop technicians
  • Managing 3rd party fabricators
  • Evaluating the performance of prototype devices
  • Working collaboratively with other team members with expertise in other engineering disciplines
  • Well developed analytical reasoning and agility of thought in order to develop novel and innovative design solutions

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Expertise in PCB design, testing and manufacturing techniques
  • Interest in hands-on mechatronics work
  • Experience of real-time systems profiling and debugging
  • High proficiency programming in Python and C/C++
  • Experience in embedded devices, writing device drivers and understanding of real-time scheduling and resource allocation
  • Specification of electrical components to the appropriate standard for the intended application
  • Understanding of sensor technologies and transduction principles, including electronic design for sensor interfacing
  • Knowledge of communications protocols (e.g. SPI, I2C, TCP/IP, UDP, Fieldbus, serial)
  • Experience with choosing motors for motion control applications
  • Expertise designing power electronics for electric motors  (ac, dc, stepper)
  • Experience with FPGAs
  • Previous experience with the low-level control of robotic or prosthetic devices
  • Familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System)
  • Familiarity with CAD systems
