About the role:

The Ocado Smart Platform Network Team is seeking a Network Engineer to lead the delivery of core network and automated projects for our international robotic fulfillment warehouses.

With thousands of network devices operating across the globe, we have ambitious plans to launch new warehouse networks this year and beyond. As our operations scale, we increasingly rely on DevOps practices to manage this growth effectively.

You'll be joining an established, experienced team. The ideal candidate will have started their career as a Network Engineer before expanding their expertise to include network automation technologies like Python, Yang, Netconf, and cloud services. We're particularly interested in candidates with experience in continuous testing, deployment, monitoring, and infrastructure as code.

Our networks primarily use Juniper Networks hardware, including MX, SRX, QFX, and EX products, with Palo Alto firewalls also playing a role. MPLS is at the core of our network, utilizing the Juniper MX router platform. In our data centers, we deploy a mix of L3VPNs and EVPN-enabled VXLAN overlays. The role and responsibilities are as follows; 

  • Design solutions aligned with Ocado Tech engineering principles.
  • Deliver business value and solve technical challenges.
  • Minimize waste in workflows and use data to inform future designs.
  • Adhere to and improve quality standards.
  • Recommend industry practices, conduct testing, and address security vulnerabilities.
  • Enhance diagnostics to resolve product issues.
  • Address support queries and participate in out-of-hours support as needed.
  • Contribute to technical decisions and standards within your team.
  • Support and actively participate in team continuous improvement.
  • Engage in technical discovery and design activities, sharing insights.

What we’re looking for: 

  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, particularly with Juniper 
  • Proficiency in Python 
  • Experience with Linux, especially Debian/Ubuntu 
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools, such as Python, Yang, Netconf, Ansible/Puppet/Salt/Chef, or similar 
  • A good grasp of DevOps principles and practices.

Bonus points for knowledge of:

  • Cloud development, especially with AWS (primary) and GCP (secondary).
  • Network certifications (e.g., JNCIS, JNCIP, JNCIE).
  • Experience with Juniper platforms like MX, SRX, QFX, and EX.
  • Data plane and control plane protocols, such as OSPF, BGP, MPLS, VXLAN, and EVPN.
  • Network services like DHCP, DNS, NTP, RADIUS, and SNMP.
  • AWS infrastructure management.
  • Version control tools, such as Git.
  • General Linux system administration.
  • Pytest for testing.
  • YANG data modeling.
  • Monitoring systems like Nagios, Prometheus, Grafana, and LibreNMS.
  • CI/CD processes and tools.
  • Agile development methodologies.
