Field Service Engineer

We have an exciting vacancy for a driven individual to join our Central Engineering department as a Product Support Engineer with a heavy emphasis on Controls. This is a permanent vacancy with regular travel required. (80% travel, 20% remote)

This role forms part of the team that underpins Ocado Technology's technical focus, being a key contributor to your team’s delivery. In this role, you will be a go-to person in your team, with great expertise, problem solving and knowledge sharing. You’ll be working with others to find great solutions and supporting technical decision making in your team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Responsible for your personal delivery towards team goals, managing and prioritising your workload effectively.
  • Field mark ups of product documentation (drawings, manuals, guides, checklists, etc.) are sent in a timely and clear manner to technical support colleagues & Product Engineer.
  • Ensure MSC has all that is required to enable them to work up any required quality / supply chain-related issue or solution through the appropriate process.
  • Ensure Product Engineers have all that is required to enable them to work up any required product change request or solution through the Change Control Process.
  • Reporting of field visits, product issues are formally communicated back to technical support colleagues and escalated to product engineers as required.
  • Work closely with our Product Development colleagues to receive new products and developments, being actively engaged with early field deliveries of new products to ensure successful handover of product to the Central Engineering team.
  • Work to and follow all CDM (or local equivalent) guidance, both external (CDM Regulations 2015 and associated Guidance L153) and internal (the Ocado CDM15 procedures and processes, HS&E policy and associated Arrangement Policies). To seek guidance from the HS&E team where there is uncertainty.
  • Extract, gather and present data on the operation of your Product. Use this data to support future design and delivery.

Key Experience & Attributes

 

  • Proven experience in a field service engineering role within manufacturing, automotive, airports, FMCG distribution environment.
  • Experience in PLC programming and automation, including strong knowledge of automation control, sensors, and actuators, and experience in commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC-based control systems
  • Installation & commissioning of complex products and / or systems
  • Excellent technical and practical competence relating to automation and general engineering
  • Aptitude to debate detail (both technical and commercial) with both internal and external parties
  • Skilled in use of small hand tools
  • Comfortable using field test & measurement equipment e.g. DMM
  • Work in a safe manner at all times and appreciate the implications and requirements of relevant product safety and compliance
  • Appreciation of applicable directives, codes standards etc. (e.g. machinery directive)
  • Knowledge of Siemens TIA portal (V14/V15/V16)
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, etc.).
  • Experience in commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC-based control systems.

 

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of Siemens safety PLC and experience with functional safety systems.
  • Experience using Beckhoff control systems.
  • Technical / Engineering qualification, to HND level in a relevant field Ocado’s Automation Products require a range of specialisations, these can include (but not limited to).
