Women in Logistics - Kyla's story

Kyla talks to us about how she went from a professional classical singer to a CSTM for Ocado Logistics during the pandemic and what she enjoys most about her role.

My name is Kyla Lingley, and I’m a CSTM. I make sure our fabulous customers receive excellent customer service. I've been with Ocado Logistics for 4 years. I started during the “Glitch” Covid. Before this, I was a professional classical singer for 15 years. I'll be honest; I never thought I would be a delivery driver. But when my career stopped and only key worker jobs were available, Ocado was the only place I would consider working.

I was a customer for 10 years, and knowing their reputation as a high-end grocery store, I hoped they shared the same values as I did in my personal life. It turns out they do, and they did not disappoint.

When I auditioned for Ocado, I had no idea how much fun it was going to be. I have been on so many adventures and seen so many different things, which I was never exposed to in my singing career. I have met people from many walks of life and encountered many fabulous personalities while working with Ocado Logistics.

I wasn’t sure how I would feel being institutionalised, but it turns out I like it. Perhaps that’s because when I’m in my cute little van, it’s just me and the open road. I was worried my creative side would be squashed, but it wasn’t. I am free to be creative and allowed to have fun, which is very important for my wellbeing.

I have also learned new skills, such as becoming a professional driver. Challenges included driving down those country lanes where you never know what is around the corner. As a horse rider myself, I am always extra cautious when heading out on the roads. Other challenges, in the beginning, were parking and navigating those very tight roads that looked impassable for my van. It's also a very physical job that keeps me fit, which I love.

This role has opened my eyes as a customer to what a CSTM truly does. For years, receiving a delivery was something I took for granted when it arrived at my doorstep. Now, I have a great appreciation for this role.

I’m still with Ocado because, for me, it doesn't feel like a “grown-up job”; it’s fun and stress-free, and the people I work with are full of personality. I’m always learning new things. I feel I enhance the customer's experience with my great customer service and sometimes a song at the doorstep. I love it when I arrive at a doorstep and the customer says, “You’re not a man, so great to see a woman doing this job.” I reply, “Yes… we are slowly taking over,” and they always giggle. Every day at Ocado is an adventure!
